Making a mosaic

Mosaic,
the expression of a very ancient art, is embraced for its color effects and the unlimited ways of using different kind of materials.

This is a step-by-step illustrated project to help you to make  a mosaic of your own.

For this job you need:

Tile cutting machine
Scissors
Pliers
Float
Gloves
Tiles
Adhesive
Grout
Fiberglass mesh.

Make the project design or the pattern.

If you are a beginner, try to photocopy it and make it as the same size as the mosaic platform.

With a pair of scissors, cut along the line. Go on like this with every piece of the design.

Check if they fit again as in your initial pattern.

Choose the tiles.

Draw onto the tiles the shape of the paper.

Take the pliers and try to cut out around the drawing border.
When you've finished, the shaped tile must look exactly alike your piece of paper from the initial pattern.

Check if the mosaic pieces fit as in your initial design.

Glue the mosaic.
Fix every mosaic piece onto the fiberglass mesh.
Keep the mosaic project on a flat surface, in order not to damage it, until you'll find the perfect place for it.
Try to put the same amount of adhesive onto the pieces and push it toward the working surface
while you fix it.

Prepare the grout.

I recommend it a little bit fluid, it will fill much better into the joints.

Grouting the mosaic.

With a float or even with gloved hands, spread the grout all over the mosaic, starting from the centre.
Pull the float toward yourself and repeat until all the spaces are filled with grout.
Let it rest for a couple of minutes and than, with a wet sponge, try to clean it.

Now, your first mosaic is done.
Enjoy it and let the other to admire it.
